Safer Communities

The Territory Government is driving generational change to build safer communities through an overhaul of the Territory’s child protection and youth justice systems and a comprehensive package of alcohol harm minimisation reforms. The 2018 Budget includes $XXX million  to support law and order, systemic reform and every Territorian’s right to feel safe and secure.

Safer Communities

  • $12.2 million over two years to deliver:
    • 75 community safety officers at take-away liquor outlets in Alice Springs, Katherine and Tennant Creek
    • 12 police officers to focus on secondary supply issues in Darwin and Palmerston
    • 10 operational support staff to focus on compliance activities
    • 10 additional mobile closed-circuit television units to be used outside take-away liquor outlets or other areas as required
  • $10 million for towards the recruitment of 120 new police officers
  • $30 million to fast-track the construction of the 24-hour Palmerston Police Station
  • $860 000 ongoing towards six Public Housing Safety Officers in Katherine and Tennant Creek
  • $11.4 million over four years to develop a new family support service model and to establish 10 family support centres
  • $5.7 million over four years to establish family group conferencing to involve families in decisions relating to the care and protection of their children
  • $1.2 million over four years to establish a dedicated Children's Court in Alice Springs
  • $5.23 million to develop a new private accommodation model to meet the needs of vulnerable young people
  • $2.77 million to establish a Clinical Practice Directorate tasked with improving child protection practice
  • $5.39 million over four years to improve the involvement of Aboriginal communities in decision making and implementing new elements of the home care system
  • $12.9 million over four years for the Regional Youth Services Fund
  • $9.89 million over four years to keep children out of detention and to improve outcomes for children and young people
